The Lonely Path is the dramatization of surreal conflicts inside minds of teenagers as they grapple with the realities of culture and tradition.
It is the love story of Jonathan , a high school student from England, sent to India by his ‘mixed culture’ parents to avoid their acrimonious disputes as they prepare for an inevitable divorce. His passion for joy, matched by his intelligence and leadership qualities make him a loving ‘pardesi’ desi. A light friendship with Anjali, a traditional untreated Schizophreniac, arouses his curiosity of a traditional India he never knew. As his curiosity turns into a desire to make a difference to this girl who he could bring joy to – he is dragged into a net that pushes him deeper into an oblivion where reasoning has no home as Anjali’s schizophrenia manifests as paranoia and psychotic expressions. In this abyss, all the forks on the lonely path point to the same route - escapism through death.
It is the personal growth story of a newly arrived student, Bahadur , sent from his home in a rural Indian village to be exposed to the rigidity of ‘big city’ life. As he witnesses the social decay of his idol Jonathan- his fears of underperforming transform into a flame of leadership.
It is the story of the disillusions of Sonali, a DHALSA dancer from USA visiting relatives in India to discover her Asian roots. Her involvement in the local romance tragedy leads her to the horror of discovery of displaced cultures and the intense jealousy it breeds and she falls victim to the eternal clash of Western culture and Asian tradition.
It is a story of teenagers expressing solidarity to ‘The Lonely Path’ through sentiments of love, passion, humor and drama as events leading to the looming tragedy of Jonathan and Anjali unfold right before their eyes.
